5G is an evolution of previous communications technologies, or the fifth generation of mobile communications technology, which aims to create faster connections to transmit increasing amounts of data.

This is made possible by a technological solution such as Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). It is a technology where both 4G and 5G can be used in the same band.

There has been a lot of media coverage of the auction of the 3.5 GHz band in Estonia, but it is not the only band that can be used for 5G transmission. The idea behind DSS is that spectrum will be used more efficiently, as the same band will be used for both 4G and 5G, according to users’ needs.

Rapid advances in technology allow us to start offering 5G today and as an innovation leader, we do not see any reason to miss this opportunity. There are a significant number of people among our customers who want to be part of the latest in technology, and this is one very specific thing we can offer them. For our part, we can take the first step towards making 5G available to end-users, and the auction of the 3.5 GHz band already creates new opportunities for further developments, both in terms of 5G network expansion and speeds.

As is the case with all mobile technologies, the speed offered by 5G depends on the number of users, as mobile communication is a shared resource. In our tests, we have achieved speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s. Once the state has also allocated 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz frequencies, speeds can already reach several gigabits per second.

Today’s solution makes use of existing spectrum resources that are not able to absorb the additional capacity that 5G high-speed connectivity will bring. In order to provide 5G home Internet capacity, we will need additional frequency resources. In addition, at the time of launch, 5G is not yet available in the main areas of use of wireless home Internet.

Mobile Internet speeds will also improve in the areas where we build new 5G base stations. As this is a shared resource, the final speed will depend on the number of customers using the network at the same time.

The new solution is just so fresh. Ericsson, the manufacturer of Telia’s mobile base stations, started to offer it to its customers from the beginning of 2020. To date, the solution has been adopted by a dozen telecommunications operators around the world and is being tested by dozens more. Telia also tested the new solution, first in its own lab and then on the real network, to provide customers with the best possible service and avoid unexpected problems.

5G is one and the same: one complements the other. The additional frequency resource will allow resource-intensive services to be rolled out (such as 5G speeds for home Internet) and even higher network speeds to be offered.

At the time of launch, the new solution will be available to owners of certain Sony and Xiaomi models, but it is expected to be added to the range of 5G-enabled devices in the coming months.

Starting from 4 June 2021, Apple will issue a software update for its 12 series iPhones, which will allow these models to use the Telia 5G network for the first time in Estonia.

As a result, the entire iPhone 12 series – iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max – will receive Telia 5G network support.

You may need to restart your phone for Telia 5G to function on your phone.

In order to activate 5G network support on iPhone 12 models, Apple will offer an automatic device upgrade, Carrier Bundle version 46.1, from 4 June 2021, which must be accepted by the device user. The update may reach different devices at different times. Users should also make sure their phone is running on the operation system iOS 14.5. If your phone is running an older version of software, you will need to update the software first, after which you will be offered the option to add 5G support.

To a certain extent, the process of checking for iPhone 12 Series updates can also be launched manually. To do this, you need to go through the following steps in the phone menu: Settings – General – About and click on Network Provider.

Depending on the model, a 5G-enabled phone may need to be rebooted or downloaded with the latest available software version in order to use 5G. For iPhone 12 series phones, Apple offers an automatic device update, Carrier Bundle version 46.1, which must be accepted by the device user. Phones default to a 5G network and there is no need to change the setting manually. It is not possible to manually force a phone to use a 5G-only network everywhere.

Telia’s 5G network is gradually being rolled out to different areas, so you should keep an eye on whether a 5G base station is already operational in a particular location. In addition, Samsung’s 5G phones, for example, do not yet have the necessary software support in Estonia to use 5G. Also, phones purchased that are not intended for use in this region will not allow 5G.

5G support on a device depends on both the hardware and software of the device, neither of which can be changed by Telia. Such support can only be created by a specific device manufacturer. However, Telia is interested in the fact that as many devices as possible have 5G support, and we are in active communication with all the major device manufacturers in the region.
