Telia to Invest €50M in Broadband
According to Kirke Saar, CTO at Telia Estonia, this investment package is a five-fold increase compared to a regular level. “This is the largest ever broadband upgrade project in Estonia, which will bring Telia’s Future Network that enables must faster speeds to all corners of Estonia“.
Within the course of the network upgrade, Telia will step-by-step replace its current ADSL-based broadband with modern technologies like fiber optics and VDSL2. “Fiber optics enables us to provide home internet with the speeds of up to 1Gbps for both download and upload. By using VDSL technology we will be able to provide speeds up to ten times faster compared to today’s ADSL network,“ Kirke Saar explained.
The development of Telia’s Future Network is currently ongoing in several locations and tens of thousands of people will be able to enjoy must faster speeds already this year. Approximately half of the development resource is currently allocated to Tallinn and Harju county. Fiber optics cable system will be built in Rae, Suurupi, Patika, Lilleküla, Nõmme, Pirita, and Viimsi. The last three areas will remain in focus in the future as well. The goal is to deliver the fiber optics cable to all homes in these areas by Christmas 2018.
The network is upgraded in other counties as well. For example, in Tartu Supilinn, Tammelinn, Ropka, and Ihaste districts. Developments are also ongoing in Pärnu county, Võru county, Lääne county, Ida-Viru county, and Lääne county.
In the coming weeks, Telia will launch a website which shows broadband development plans and the planned schedule of works. Additionally, it will be possible to let Telia know that you would like to subscribe to Telia’s Future Network.
According to Toivo Praakel, Network Director at Telia Estonia, the network modernization program will last until 2020 and will enable connections speeds of at least 100 Mbps for all Telia customers.
“We consider the needs of both our current and future customers when we develop our networks. We constantly update our services portfolio with new solutions. Also, faster and better broadband improves our quality of life – we can perform online tasks faster, and thus have more time for other activities. All of our broadband customers can let us know via the Telia self-service portal that they would like to have a faster connection. I also recommend customers to check self-service from time to time to see what network developments have taken place or are planned for your area. Some of our customers have been surprised to see that they already have access to a faster connection,“ Toivo Praakel explained.
Faster broadband enables to watch online content in HD quality, use internet on several devices simultaneously, use more than one TV set to watch Telia TV, and upload photos and videos much faster than before. Also, faster and better internet connection makes it possible to work remotely from home.
All customers who will be able to upgrade to a faster connection will receive a notification from Telia. The most convenient way to subscribe to the Future Network is via Telia’s online self-service portal. It is also possible to subscribe by calling Telia’s Customer Care Line 123 (the line is open 24/7).
