Telia to Invest €3M in Broadband Infrastructure in Viimsi Parish
On November 27th, Siim Kallas, Mayor of the Municipality of Viimsi, and Kirke Saar, CTO at Telia Estonia signed a joint letter of intent, in which they agreed to improve the possibilities for the inhabitants of Viimsi to use fast internet.
The goal of Viimsi Parish is to ensure that by June 1, 2019, 95 per cent of households and businesses in Viimsi would have the technical capability to implement fast internet connection. Telia will invest €3 million into development and modernization of the broadband infrastructure in Viimsi Parish.
According to Siim Kallas, Mayor of the Municipality of Viimsi, this is an important step, which will create possibilities to improve both residential living conditions and business environment. “Together with Taavi Kotka, chairman of the municipal council, we initiated a project with the purpose of creating a technical capability to implement fast internet. This is an important development for local people, and it also supports our future plans where we see our economic potential in creating more ‘smart’ jobs,” Siim Kallas said.
“Fast internet is a very important resource for improving living and working conditions. In the first stage, we will map households and businesses who want to participate in the project. Our goal is to offer modern solutions to the people of Viimsi, and I hope that they will be very interested in this”, Siim Kallas added. According to him, the letter of intent is not exclusive, which means that other service providers are also welcome to participate in the project.
According to Kirke Saar, CTO at Telia, covering Viimsi with fast broadband is a good example of a partnership between local municipalities and private sector. “We are very pleased to collaborate with Viimsi Parish, who actively supports bringing fast and modern internet connection to its people. This collaboration will bring fast internet connection to thousands of homes in Viimsi in the next eighteen months. We hope that other municipalities will show the same kind of initiative,“ Kirke Saar noted.
